The Board Meeting had come to an end. Bob started to stand up and jostled the table, spilling his coffee over his notes. "How embarrassing. I am getting so clumsy in my old age."
Everyone had a good laugh, and soon we were all telling stories of our most embarrassing moments. It came around to Frank who sat quietly listening to the others. Someone said, "Come on, Frank. Tell us your most embarrassing moment."
Frank laughed and began to tell us of his childhood. "I grew up in San Pedro. My Dad was a fisherman, and he loved the sea. He had his own boat, but it was hard making a living on the sea. He worked hard and would stay out until he caught enough to feed the family. Not just enough for our family, but also for his Mom and Dad and the other kids that were still at home."

前段時(shí)間，單位有位大姐拿著一個(gè)英語(yǔ)句子問(wèn)我語(yǔ)法。我非常好奇，一個(gè)已經(jīng)到了中年的婦女居然還在不斷學(xué)習(xí)英語(yǔ)!她說(shuō)自己堅(jiān)持學(xué)習(xí)有6年了，到現(xiàn)在有一萬(wàn)多的詞匯量，剛開始的英語(yǔ)底子就是26個(gè)英文字母。在日本留學(xué)的兒子告訴她，新概念是非常好的教材，他就開始自學(xué)新概念，新概念英語(yǔ)讀的朗朗上口。我在她辦公室桌上看有本新概念英語(yǔ)四，隨手拿起來(lái)一看，上面密密麻麻全是注釋，音標(biāo)、詞義、語(yǔ)法等等寫的非常詳細(xì)，她把新概念的每一個(gè)句子都詳細(xì)的分析過(guò)!她說(shuō)自己學(xué)習(xí)英語(yǔ)主要是工作以外的時(shí)間，辦公室有活兒了就抓緊時(shí)間把工作做完，因?yàn)闆](méi)有上網(wǎng)、玩游戲的愛(ài)好，工作之外的時(shí)間就用學(xué)英語(yǔ)來(lái)“打發(fā)”，辦公室里有電腦，所以有時(shí)也會(huì)跟著錄音讀。
我問(wèn)她為什么都到中年了還要堅(jiān)持學(xué)外語(yǔ)呢，她回答的很有意思——以后要是當(dāng)奶奶了，不想讓孫子看到自己的奶奶啥都不懂。
一位中年婦女沒(méi)有任何英語(yǔ)底子，居然可以不為過(guò)級(jí)，不為升學(xué)，毫無(wú)功利心的學(xué)習(xí)英語(yǔ)，年輕的我們會(huì)有何感想?大學(xué)的時(shí)候誦讀《道德經(jīng)》，老子的無(wú)為思想我至今無(wú)法理解，后來(lái)我想這種精心耕耘，不問(wèn)收獲，毫無(wú)功利心的去做一件事兒，是不是就是對(duì)道家無(wú)為思想的一種解釋?年輕的我們又該如何?這或許正是她給予我們年輕人的力量和意義!

He looked at us and said, "I wish you could have met my Dad. He was a big man, and he was strong from pulling the nets and fighting the seas for his catch. When you got close to him, he smelled like the ocean. He would wear his old canvas, foul-weather coat and his bibbed overalls. His rain hat would be pulled down over his brow. No matter how much my Mother washed them, they would still smell of the sea and of fish."
Frank‘s voice dropped a bit. "When the weather was bad he would drive me to school. He had this old truck that he used in his fishing business. That truck was older than he was. It would wheeze and rattle down the road. You could hear it coming for blocks. As he would drive toward the school,I would shrink down into the seat hoping to disappear. Half the time, he would slam to a stop and the old truck would belch a cloud of smoke. He would pull right up in front, and it seemed like everybody would be standing around and watching. Then he would lean over and give me a big kiss on the cheek and tell me to be a good boy. It was so embarrassing for me. Here, I was twelve years old, and my Dad would lean over and kiss me goodbye!"
He paused and then went on, "I remember the day I decided I was too old for a goodbye kiss. When we got to the school and came to a stop, he had his usual big smile. He started to lean toward me, but I put my hand up and said, ‘No, Dad.‘

幾個(gè)月后，我發(fā)現(xiàn)她的窗戶太臟了，通過(guò)她家窗戶看到的一切都很模糊。我不知道那個(gè)女人為什么不把窗戶洗洗。
一個(gè)陽(yáng)光燦爛的上午，我決定徹底清理一下我的公寓，包括清洗窗戶。我一直忙到下午很遲才完成，然后，我坐在窗邊小憩。多么令人驚訝啊！那個(gè)坐在窗戶邊的女人一下子變得清晰了！她的窗戶是干凈的！突然，我意識(shí)到我犯了一個(gè)錯(cuò)誤。原來(lái)我一直在通過(guò)自家的臟窗戶看她！
那對(duì)我來(lái)說(shuō)是一個(gè)很重要的教訓(xùn)。從那以后，無(wú)論我什么時(shí)候想要判斷一個(gè)人，我首先問(wèn)問(wèn)自己，“我看他時(shí)，我心靈之窗是否骯臟？”然后，我努力洗凈我內(nèi)心世界的窗戶，只有這樣我才能看清外面的世界。
